Poole Family YMCA

Project Overview

In the City of Garner, there has been nearly a 30 percent increase in population over the past 15 years. With such growth and community interest, a capital campaign was started in May 2015 for a new YMCA. Raising $7.2 million, the community YMCA has become a reality — the Poole Family YMCA opened in February of 2018. This facility is a place for the community to engage with one another and promote healthy living in Garner. At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Peter Williams, Chief Volunteer Officer of the YMCA of the Triangle said, “While we mark the opening of this incredible facility, we are really celebrating the life-changing impact of the YMCA here in Garner, the power of possibility and the power of us.”

The facility has the capacity to serve 5,000 members of the Garner community with numerous amenities. There is a 4,500 SF Wellness Center, mens and womens locker rooms, nursery/kids adventure area, outdoor aquatics center, indoor track, group exercise studios, and gymnasium and youth program space. The outdoor swimming pools have a full concrete deck and a pool house. Additional features include an 8,000-square-foot basketball court, a full fitness equipment area and several multi-purpose rooms.

As part of the preconstruction work, the Holt Brothers Construction team evaluated constructability challenges and performed full quantitative takeoffs for the structure and the sitework. Schedules were created for preconstruction and construction phases, including a logistics plan. The team also evaluated soil reports for related challenges in site work and value- engineered to find cost-effective alternatives to materials and construction methods. Holt Brothers Construction also participated in live design sessions to assist through the programming stages with RATIO Architects. During this design phase, budgets were created to evaluate the investment cost to the owner.
