Project Overview
The transformation of this historic 1954 high school honors its legacy as a community cornerstone while introducing a cutting-edge facility designed for future generations. The new design streamlines operations by consolidating programs previously spread across 15 aging buildings into one modern, efficient space. Rooted in the community’s history, the school remains on its original site, with construction carefully phased to minimize disruptions and keep classrooms operational.
This project was shaped by the voices of students, faculty, alums, and residents, reflecting the community’s deep pride and connection to the school. Thoughtful design elements honor its rich history, including gathering spaces, outdoor connections, and signature features like a courtyard, theater, and multiuse “omni” space. These elements celebrate the school’s past while supporting its future as an education and community activity hub.
The building incorporates thoughtful details that celebrate the school’s culture and history. A timeline at the entrance highlights key events in the predominantly Black community since the school’s founding in 1954. The omni space doubles as a dining area and a venue for community events, featuring flags representing the diverse student body. School pride is showcased with a bold lion graphic in the cafeteria, while display cases preserve artifacts from the original campus, keeping the school’s history alive for generations to come.
